Blog Assignment 1

About Me

My name's Wesley Etheridge. I was born and raised in the Mobile, Alabama area. I grew up in the small town of Saraland, Alabama. I actually like the city I live in. I'm interested in quite a few things. I like learning History, playing sports, watching movies, and reading. I like every sport and every genre of movies. My favorite authors are Timothy Keller and CS Lewis. This is my second semester at the University of South Alabama. I graduated from Satsuma High School in 2009. I always wanted to follow in my father's footsteps and attend the University of Alabama after graduating high school, but I decided to start off at Faulkner State Community College. After my two years at Faulkner State I transferred to the University of Alabama. I thought it would be my wildest dreams, but I discovered I missed home. After a year at Alabama I transferred to the University of South Alabama. After the first week of class last semester I knew that I made the right decision. I'm a family person and believe that family is extremely important. Both of my parents are Alabamians too. My father and mother both went to high school together at Satsuma. I have one sister. I met my girlfriend about a year ago. My family has always been there for me. I decided to become a teacher when I was a sophomore at Satsuma. I had a phenomenal History teacher who influenced me in a tremendous way. I have a passion for helping people and being a teacher is the greatest way to do that.

Class Room Methods

I'm still learning new methods everyday that I want to apply to my class room. I hope that even when I become a teacher I learn new methods. I must say I'm really interested in the method that Dr. Strange uses. I think after just one week in his class I'm sold against "Burp Back Education". I hope my teaching is a type that allows the student to learn and not just memorize. I think the best way to achieve this is to be diverse. Not every student learns the same way. I plan on utilizing the tools I have available. Computers, Tablets, and even smart phones can be a great aid in learning.

I will be teaching anywhere from 6th to 12th graders. This is the age group that I feel I can relate to the most. I consider this age group young adults. I believe I have a gift to reach teenagers.

As I said before I love History. I believe History is undervalued in our country. Majoring in Social Science I will be able to teach a wide variety of subjects dealing with Historical events. I'm not saying other subjects are less important than history, but I do feel history is the only subject that teaches who, what, where, and why.

Time Management

This video is a great aid for anyone. It taught me how money and time are intertwined. The way Randy talked about experience is so true. "Failing to plan is planning to fail" is the greatest well known saying I know.

I did not know who Randy Pausch was before this video. He's a great speaker and can relate to anyone. I felt like he was directly talking to me. I watched a few of his other videos on youtube as well. In our culture not many people are good at managing time. It's something everyone can improve on.
